Historically, the study of medicine and all other health care sciences begins with the study of anatomy among other pre-clinical subjects. Therefore, the Department of Anatomy began at the real inception of the Faculty of Medicine of Mbarara University of Science and Technology in 1989. In medical practice and teaching of medical programmes, Anatomical Sciences are core to the health workers’ professional development. The courses in anatomy are indispensable in all clinical medicine specialties, among other fields of the medical profession. In its nearly three decades of existence, this department has played an indispensable role in human resource development for health and related fields in Uganda and the whole African continent. The department provides student-centered anatomical education to various undergraduate and post graduate students, including medical, physiotherapy, nursing, pharmacy, pharmaceutical, medical laboratory science, emergency medicine, general surgery and obstetrics and gynecology.

Our Vision is to be a national and regional leader in integrating knowledge creation and dissemination to change how anatomy, histology and embryology research and teaching is done.

Our mission is to champion and enhance innovation in anatomical education and research; inspire and empower the next generation of students; broaden community engagement; and create new partnerships to attract and produce the best faculty, staff and students.

Our Core values are: Excellence; Integrity; Teamwork and Accountability.
