Mbarara University of Science and Technology - Succeed We Must



Mr Nyemara Novatus is a Counselling Psychologist and Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, Mbarara University of Science and Technology. In his clinical work, he has employed various therapies to manage psychosocial and mental challenges of children and adolescents. He attended an online course in the Fundamentals of CBT-An Interactive Online Course which equipped him with the skills to conduct cognitive behavioral psychotherapies.

He earned a competitive fellowship under Mbarara University Research Training Initiative (MURTI) funded by Fogarty International Center. Under this fellowship, he investigated “Alcohol Use Disorders among Adolescents and Family Functioning in Greater Mbarara District, western Uganda”. He successfully managed data collection, data entry, and analysis and made oral and poster presentation of results of this study in both local and international conferences. He also won micro research funds twice sponsored by Dalhousie, Canada and Child Health Uganda.


Novatus has taught and supervised students’ research at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and has also participated in research programs tailored towards addressing the reproductive and mental health needs of adolescents. His major research interests are; adolescents’ mental health and family systems. He is a dedicated researcher whose goal is to grow into an accomplished, independent and leader of research and contributor towards improvement of mental health of children and adolescents in LMICs.
