Pathology is a branch of science that deals with studying of etiology, mechanism and effects of diseases on human beings or animals. Most of this is done through laboratory examination of tissues, fluids or smears.

The department of pathology at MUST started in 1990 and is a core department in the Faculty of Medicine.

Pathology department was set up to improve the understanding of medicine therefore making it a good link between non clinical and clinical years of medical school.

The department serves the students and community through teaching, diagnosis, research and innovation.

The MUST pathology department is a referral unit for cases which required histological and cytological diagnoses in the region that are not sent to private laboratories because it has the only government funded histopathology unit in the southwestern Uganda
